PS from Paris US edition eBook Marc Levy Sam Taylor

Over the years, I have found that books that promise to be funny or a “comedy” seldom live up to the hype. While I am not sure why I took a chance with author Marc Levy’s “P.S. from Paris,” I have to say that it was not a disappointment. Here’s why:

CHARACTERS – Mia is an actress, caught between her career and the actions of her philandering husband. Her life is one that pulls her in directions she doesn’t always want to go, and she struggles with the feelings that she begins to feel for Paul. Paul Barton, who is essentially a one-hit wonder when it comes to the novels he has written, already has a long-term lover. However, it is easy to see he has feelings for Mia. Both of the main characters are deeply described, and readers are able to see the thoughts they share with us (even as they keep those secrets from each other).
There are a couple of supporting characters – Daisy, who is Mia’s best friend, and Cristoneli, Paul’s editor. Both help to move the story along. Daisy is a thorn or a salve at any given moment, but her best wishes are always for her friend. Cristoneli is a humorous person, and although he is a bit one-dimensional, I enjoyed the chapters where he is featured.

PLOT – Let’s face it, a romantic comedy is a romantic comedy. However, Mr. Levy has thrown in a number of twists, so many that a mystery writer would be proud. There were a couple of times where I felt the plot was beginning to bog down, but the author was always there to rekindle the action and keep me reading. In fact, the last 15% had me so wrapped up that I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.
The scene where Mia and Paul meet is priceless. Thrust together unknowingly and not for the reasons each of them suspect, the chapter is definitely one of the best in the book. The interplay developed at that time continues throughout the story, making this an enjoyable tale.

DIALOGUE – This book lives on dialogue, no matter whether it is between characters or when Mia or Paul are having a discussion within their own minds. Because of this, the book flies by, and the characters are intimately revealed by what they say…and also, by what they don’t say.

JUST IN CASE YOU WANTED TO KNOW – Most of the vulgarities present in many books today are missing, although there are a few words here and there. All scenes of affection are tastefully done and it would not be embarrassing if a younger reader browsed through and read them.

OVERALL – While I did not laugh out loud, many of the scenes put a smile on my face. The story is charming and a lot of fun. Mr. Levy’s deft handling of two people falling in love while not realizing it deserves five stars.

PS from Paris US edition eBook Marc Levy Sam Taylor Reviews

I have mixed feelings about this book. It is an easy read, but not one that haunts you until you pick it back up, or keeps you reading into the night. At best, you can pass a mildly pleasant couple of hours. The characters are barely relatable, nice people but two-dimensional. The conversations are contrived, an effort made to be cute or funny, but really not. I thought the "meet cute" was just painful. Every few pages a character mumbles dialog (so we know what hilarious thoughts they are supposedly thinking), and another character says "What?" and they reply "Nothing." Perhaps this worked better in the original French. I think I only laughed once. There was a hint at another romance which, disappointingly, was never fleshed out. I did find out something interesting when I completed the book, however. There are a couple of vague references in the storyline to an unusual way that the main character's friends Arthur and Lauren met, and I was baffled that it was never revealed. Now I see that that is the subject of one of Levy's prior books, If Only It Were True, and the movie made from it "Just Like Heaven". Ha! I saw that movie. Now it all makes sense. I wonder if that other vague romance will find its own book?
Good Lord! I just finished this book and it was only the other reviews that made me finish it. The first two thirds are so boring and banal that I was in despair. It did pick up at the end and had a couple of twists and a nice ending, but that wasn't enough to make up for suffering thru the rest. Two thumbs down!
One of the most cheesy and unconvincing stories I have ever read. Very stilted language and dialogue, perhaps because it was translated into English, but I suspect that it was fairly faithful to the original. Characters were completely one-dimensional, unsympathetic, and utterly boring. Thankfully it didn't take long to read, because it was truly a waste of my time.
For my kindle first selection this month I resolved to choose a book I'd normally never choose, and when the email came through tonight, it boiled down to this book, and the one about the three sisters. I got the sample chapters from both, and finally decided "PS from Paris" was it for me. However, I had no great expectations when I started reading. It seemed to progress just as expected. I loved Mia immediately, but Paul not quite so quickly...though I came to enjoy him just as much not too many chapters in. The romance was slow... The two didn't actually even meet until about 30%, which I was surprised at, but decided it generally added to the enjoyment of the story.

Overall, this book was a nice read. Slow, but not unpleasantly so. Engaging characters. Descriptive. Clean language. Absolutely no sexual content. This book was G rated, and enjoyable. I liked it.

What I really didn't expect, however, was for the twists to start coming in toward the last part of the book. That, was TOTALLY unexpected... Particularly for it being a contemporary fiction. I was fantastically surprised, and fantastically impressed. I really just saw none of the end of the book coming. I wish I could say more without giving anything away, but I don't dare. All I can say is that I was surprised, and really pleased with how everything turned out. It was incredibly touching, something I did NOT see coming, and I'm not the slightest bit sorry I chose it for my kindle first book.
