I've always had a passion for the history of the Roman Empire, especially the period from approximately 100 BCE TO 100 AD. Since most of this story takes place during the later part of the 1st century AD, at the end of Tiberius' reign and the beginning of Caligula's, it's right in my wheelhouse!

The author is obviously a student of Roman history, interweaving historical figures with fictional characters throughout the novel. The narrative's heart is mainly about three characters: a well respected Centurion who yearns for a world beyond battles and military intrigue; an ambitious Tribune, and the daughter of a senator, who becomes the Centurion's unlikely love interest.  As the story unfolds, there are others who get their turn to be the focus of a section, but we consistently come back to these three as they interact and oppose each other.

I appreciated the attention to detail regarding the Roman world, which drew this reader into the story quite effectively. I also admired how the author used Roman names to identify items or specific roles. Occasionally, I'd look up a word that I didn't recognize, such as an item which turned out to be part of a legionaires uniform, and in the process, expand my knowledge of
Roman armor!

The author skillfully interveaves action sequences, with political intrigue, or a romantic scenes with Elemental magic. The attention to detail, coupled with extremely likeable characters, effective pacing, plus a teaser about upcoming books in the series, made this a fast read that left me looking for more. I highly recommend "The Leopard Vanguard"!

I gave up on this about half way through. The story seems to have a split personality. On one had it is a fairly well written romance/adventure tale suitable for the young adult reader. However, it seems then to have had bad language and adult content patched in here and there to "spice things up" which doesn't mesh with the character's very well.
A fun escape and a great read!
Great historical fiction peace with some magic thrown in. Enjoyed recognizing so many of the characters.
The Leopard Vanguard is Tullus' journey from leaving a military role, to joining a circus troupe, to becoming The Leopard King. The first part of the book was my favorite, with great battle scenes and I did like Tullus the most at this point. Following his resignation from the military, the story takes a sharp turn and follows Tullus joining a circus troupe in which he quickly becomes a different character. The last half of the novel is filled with Tullus becoming The Leopard King (kind of Zorro to me, a masked type hero) and he gets caught up in a slight love triangle. I like T.A. Uners quality of work as a writer, because he obviously polishes his material. The last 1/2 of the novel wasn't really my cup of tea, but the writing was great and i'm sure many adults will enjoy this story. There is a touch of magic and mythology in it and Roman politics (which were dialogue scenes that bored me a bit). I rate the story a 3.5 but rounded up to 4, good job Uner.
I’m a big fan of Roman History, and when you combine fantasy elements in I’m even more interested. Uner’s writing style is smooth and he made the settings come alive with just the right amounts of details. Although the story starts off slow, it does remain engaging enough to keep the reader’s interest. There were scenes in the book that I felt slowed the pacing of the book and took focus off the protagonist and the plot. I also wished the fantasy aspects were more developed in book one. The characters are well developed with enough moral ambiguity that fleshes them out in a good way. In the end it’s a good read and if you like books about Roman history, political intrigue and vengeance then you may want to read this one.
I'll start by saying I was predisposed to liking this one. It's setting is the Roman Empire in the mid part of 1st century A.D. and I've always liked Roman history. The bulk of the story takes place at the end of Tiberius' reign and the beginning of Caligula's.

As the book progresses there are others who get their turn to be the focus of a section, but we consistently come back to these three as they interact and oppose each other.

The attention to detail regarding the Roman world is something I did appreciate, and works very well at drawing the reader into the story. I did enjoy the parts where the author would give a Roman name for an item or role and then leave it to the descriptions to allow the reader to work out what was being referred to.

There are also a number of well-written action sequences, ranging from one on one combat to a full scale Legion offensive. Again, the attention to detail here is very immersive. As is the slow unraveling of one the central plot lines, which begins in the prologue and continues all the way through the novel (and presumably continues into the second book).

The addition of magic into this well established world is also gradual, beginning with brief mentions early on and evolving into one of the main characters being identified as having a gift for the now-outlawed practice of Elemence and hints that there are others who can make use of similar abilities. For whatever reason, this seemed the vaguest part of the book for me; although, based on the glossary at the back, there is still plenty to explore.

Even without my previously mentioned liking for the period, I believe I would have enjoyed this book. This is due to the strength of the writing, the careful placing (and pacing) of plot points and the teases of what will be in store in the second Tome, The Leopard Stratagem. I've already added it to my to-read list.
