It's so yawn engaging, boring! I know I am not the majority but I felt I had to write this review because the book costs 10 plus dollars. I find myself reading a page and then flipping over to facebook, the news, my email, filing my nails whatever and then I go back and try to read some more, and I'm back flipping through facebook, reading emails, flossing my teeth, dusting the furniture, blowing dust bunnies around the floor. The characters are flat, the mystery is not interesting, the descriptions do not trigger anything for me, I cannot get into it. It's been a long time since I had such a hard time getting through a book. I didn't like Lucy either. I didn't like how she chastised whatever his name was (see, I can't even remember his name because he was so boring), in the name of standing up for herself. This had the recipe to be good and I don't know if it was just me or the book but we did not click. I don't think I can bring myself to finish it and I'm a little over half way through. I could care less what happens to any of them. If you must read it, I would wait for it to show up at the library. I have read other books by this author and not had so much trouble. I feel bad for writing this review but I just could not let it go. And there are some people who really enjoyed it so it's probably just me but just in case it's not just me, I'm letting you know ahead of time so you can get your dust bunnies ready for the race.Tags : River Road [Jayne Ann Krentz] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <b>From the New York Times</i>–bestselling author of Dream Eyes</i> and Copper Beach</i>,Jayne Ann Krentz,River Road,Berkley,0399165126,Romance - General,Romance - Suspense,Man-woman relationships;Fiction.,Murder;Investigation;Fiction.,Women private investigators;Fiction.,AMERICAN LIGHT ROMANTIC FICTION,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction Romance General,Fiction Romance Suspense,Fiction-Romance,GENERAL,General Adult,Investigation,KRENTZ, JAYNE ANN - PROSE & CRITICISM,Man-woman relationships,Murder,RomanceModern,Romance: Modern,United States,Women private investigators

I liked this one. It is refreshing to have a book by Krentz that doesn't involve people with psychic powers linking their auras and other such nonsense. This is normal people, faced with normal bad buys, solving crimes and exploring their relationships. The heroine had a crush on the hero as a teenager, which she never acted on and he never encouraged. Thirteen years later, they're together as adults and the attraction still exists. They explore it cautiously, tentatively, and let their feelings grow naturally instead of jumping into bed the first night. At the same time, they're trying to solve current crimes that stem from events of thirteen years ago that both are trying to remember. The book is well-written, well-plotted, intricate, with lots of twists and turns. Good book, and recommended. I'm glad to see Krentz back in her old genre again - she does this type of story better than most. It's a stand-alone book, so you can start with this story without having to read multiple books that preceded it. Worth reading.
Ms. Krentz has been my favorite author for over a decade; it was, in fact, one of her books that first helped spark my love of reading. Which is why the last few releases of hers have caused me great sadness, they just didn’t resonate well with me…until this last one, River Road, which reminded me why I loved her writing so much in the first place. It may be the return to straight romantic suspense after years of paranormal or that this entry did not try to be part of a series, but whatever it was made it clear to me that I do still love reading the thrilling ride that winds its way from Ms. Krentz’s mind straight into my heart.
River Road was a fun read–intertwining interesting characters, a charming setting and a thrilling mystery. While I wouldn’t say it was perfect, (as there were loose ends, some predictability and repetition) I did find the characters relatable, the setting to be spot-on small town and the mystery to expand beyond the simple plot points to make me ponder the varieties of right and wrong, and what you would do for someone you love. As always in one of Ms. Krentz’s works I loved the fact that the characters were whole in and of themselves, not needing but wanting the other person, adding an element of choice that I feel is sometimes lacking in the fate-inspired books so popular today.
River Road was a quick and fun read that I would recommend to anyone looking to get away for a day and visit some truly special characters and I am happy to give it four charming stars. ★★★★
When forensic genealogist Lucy Sheridan returns to Summer River to close up her aunt's property, she runs into Mason Fletcher, her teenage crush. After they discover a dead body, missing for thirteen years, Lucy begins to question the car accident that killed her Aunt Sara and Mary Colfax, her partner in life and business.
This is Krentz at her absolute best and makes me sad that she rarely does any standalones any longer. She always writes fascinating heroes, strong heroines, and interesting side characters, usually with some quirkiness to add a touch of humor in the most serious situations. I really believe my favorite scene was after poor Mason was drugged, thinking he was in a movie. Krentz even had him experiencing his hospital stay in script form. Never would've expected that to work as well as it did. 5 out of 5.
I chose 3 stars because this book just didn't quite live up to its potential. It was full of redundancy. I understand an author is shooting for a specific length but have the same thing repeated 5 times is annoying. Multiple times. The conversation between characters was choppy and very superficial. Emotions were poorly described. The plot was not very linear. The climax fell short and the love making less than stellar.
Now I know this sounds harsh, but I'm a huge fan and this book just disappointed me. Almost like krentz did not write it. -( However not going to deter me from reading her books.
This is a good book but by no means a great one and absolutely not JAK at her best. The mystery certainly isn't a nail-biter or page turner though I will say the pacing is good. I didn't find the main characters to be that interesting and in several places found that for a woman who is supposed to be so smart the main character did and said some rather dumb things. There just wasn't any tension build up in either the murder plot and certainly none in the relationship story.
I purchased this for my and wish I would have waited a few months for the price to come down. You might consider checking it out from the library, borrow it, or wait for the paperback.
