Elektra Assassin Marvel Finest Frank Miller Bill Sienkiewicz Jim Novak Gaspar Saladino Books

Like many of Frank Miller's work before the 1990s, ELEKTRA: ASSASSIN is magnificent on all accounts. It's also neat to see how around this time, and along with Miller's epic RONIN, Miller was splicing a myriad of genres and ideas, such as Sienkiewicz's noir styles to cyberpunk plot-twists, elements of obsession, subterfuge, shame, and even Philip K Dick concepts like memory implants.

If Marvel had half a brain, they'd promote this book to no end. The magnitude and rarity of this storytelling gem should be celebrated on a yearly basis. Miller's more recent work may be... unspeakable at times... but a comic like this shows what the medium and committed artists are capable of!

Elektra Assassin Marvel Finest Frank Miller Bill Sienkiewicz Jim Novak Gaspar Saladino Books Reviews

Then this book is for you. If you've never read Frank Miller comics, then start with The Dark Knight Returns before this. If you love it, try this. It's hyper-violent, strange as hell, filled with cyborgs, psychic assaults, sexy ninjas, political incorrectness and spoiled mayo. Seriously, this book is messed up... in a good way. The story is actually pretty simple but told in the most confusingly complex way which is what keeps it interesting.
This is a great book and I am a fan of Frank Miller's older work with Batman and Daredevil. I didn't know much about Electra but this really peaked my interest into the Character more. The art is very unique but fits the character and story well.
Elektra Natchios, daughter of Greek Diplomat Hugo Natchios and his wife, Christina, has been a gymnast, martial artist, ninja, and assassin. Though she was a black belt by age twelve, trained in the lethal arts of Ninjitsu, and was renowned as the world's deadliest assassin, she is dead. Or is she really?

A strange woman has washed ashore off the coast of South America. No one can identify her. She does not have any finger prints to even help. When people, high in politics, begin dying it is clear that Elektra did NOT die after all. She has returned. But is she sane?

***** The story begins while Elektra is still in her mother's womb. Once born, the story is told mainly from Elektra's point-of-view. None of it makes much sense to the reader. Soon Special Agent John Garrett helps Elektra narrate. The reader then sees things happen from the point-of-view of Elektra and Garrett. Things still make little sense to the reader; however, a pattern begins to form and the reader can now piece a few things together.

Half way through this comic novel (over sized paperback), more characters begin to help narrate. Yet only one of the newer characters play a major role in clearing the air for the reader. That character is Agent Chastity McBryde, who seems almost as insane as Elektra. By the ending, the reader fully understands it all and is left utterly speechless!

If you plan to watch the January 2005 movie release "Elektra", read this first! Elektra is NOT a "super hero" and the movie does not try to portray her as one. Quit thinking "Dare Devil", "Spider Man", and/or "Batman". Elektra is totally unique. Even after reading this book I cannot say for sure whether Elektra is really sane! If you miss out on reading this comic novel, you miss out on most of who Elektra really is. *****

A very strange/violent/inappropriate story, but as well, a very good one. Frank Miller does a good job blending his own spin on writing with an overly great storytelling ability in this story, and is able to find just the right balance without going too weird or inappropriate as he often does.
This is one of the best comics I've ever read. Better and more unique than a lot of Miller and other works that get more credit.

The take I get from reviews here is that this book is really good but the story is a little cliche. Well, very few action graphic novels have really groundbreaking plots. But the writing in this book stands out because Miller makes his characters feel real. The story is moving, with Garrett's hangup on Elektra, and her own impenetrable exterior and only semi-conscious grasp of how she became what she is. This sparse, neon colored man-woman thing fits in perfectly with Miller's typical "edgy" action, which 20 years later needs a little support. Garrett is also just more fun than Bruce Wayne. Miller's typical stream-of-consciousness style usually feels a little forced, but works great in this one.

But I think the real credit for the "story" goes to Sienkewicz, who completely hit it out of the park with Elektra. What can I say, it's awesome. To tell the truth Miller's grungy and 2D-looking figures kind of disappoint me. Sienkewicz's splashy style is perfect for this story. He gets maximum expression out of simple lines and looks. And I'm not talking black-and-white stick figures. In the end, you have vibrant scenes, but relatively rough and simple characters drawn with incredible feel.
The art in this book is really fantastic. It's abstract enough to be playful, but realistic enough to render minute details that further the story.

The story is disjointed at first, and it takes some time to get used to. Miller is trying to approximate Elektra's broken psyche in the opening issue. It takes some getting used to, but it makes for a great second reading.

I'm still a bit confused about the book's ending. No spoilers, but I read it three times and can't quite wrap my head around it.
I picked up the complete hardcopy set. And now, I bought the complete copy. Simply put, it's Frank Miller's best ever Elektra! Get it!

BUT, for those don't like reading looong drawn out comic stories, for those who are kinda' lazy to read a great story that has "too many words", for those who can't appreciate some of the best artwork Marvel has put out there... and I mean some of the BEST ARTWORK EVER! well then, you might not appreciate this brilliant piece of work.

However, to me, this is a Masterpiece! It's the some of the best Elektra stuff ever; storyline and artwork!
