At first I couldn't figure out why this modern detective story flashed back to Winston Churchill's England, and to a monastery on the Isle of Wight in the 700-800's. Both tales were intriguing so I hung in there until it made sense. I'm glad I did. That's where the creepiness comes in, but I don't want to be a spoiler.The hero, Will, is a police detective, famous for solving serial murders. Will is coasting towards retirement, spending his days working minor cases and his evenings drinking and womanizing. He doesn't want the case of the Doomsday killer and he doesn't want a new goody-two-shoes partner, Nancy. In the course of solving the case he ends up driving cross-country in Nancy's grandma's car, a wanted man himself.
I read the two previews of Mr. Coroner's other books, and I can't wait to hear what happens to Will. I hope he learns his lesson. (But I doubt it!)

Some of the bests books are based in fantasy or science fiction. I require three things of them. First, an examination of some moral or character issue. Second, proportionality, meaning, establish plausible rules and stick to them. Third, don't play to the gullibility of an audience.
This book is a good read because it deals adequately with the protagonist's flaws which include alcoholism and an inability to maintain a relationship. It also has very good action and chase scenes.
The problems lie with the revealed truth which comes too close to beliefs that many people hold. It both plays to those beliefs and then adds elements that must also be sacriligeous. The revealed truth also doesn't add up logistically.
Give me an extraterrestrial source for the revealed truth. Then I can enjoy the suspension of disbelief without worrying about those who might find an element of truth.
I had purchased Glenn Cooper's 2nd book "Book of Souls" first because it was rated better than Secret. After about 30 pages I felt there was too much background information I was missing to really enjoy the "Book of Souls", so I bought the "Secret of the Seventh Son." I am so glad I did. I am a big fan of James Rollins, and I believe Mr. Cooper shows great promise. Some reviews say that too much time was spent on Will Piper's alcohol problem, and that's why I was hesitant to buy this first book. But I disagree. I don't think to much time was spent on this problem. In fact it helps you to understand him better in the 2nd book.
So I was very pleasantly surprised by "Secret of the Seventh Son". It was a great read. Interesting story line and characters. I like the way Mr. Cooper flashes back to the Abbey to tell more of the story of how the Library was created. I really enjoyed this book and am half way through the next book. I hope the author continues to bring us historical action mysteries like these.
I loved the theme of the book, but it seemed a bit disjointed. It jumped around as many books do, but this one was a bit hard to follow. You pretty much have to read "Seventh Son" through without other distractions to remember what happened in a particular area of the story last.
That said, I do recommend the book. I enjoyed reading it and as a "debut thriller" it is so much better than even some seasoned writers can accomplish. I bought it because the second of the series was available on , but many reviewers recommended reading the first before the second to better understand the characters. And this one did develop the characters well for sequels.
What if there was a HUGE collection of ancient books that listed names and birth dates and names and dates of death of every human on earth, past, present and future? The two storylines involve such books, the making of them and the safekeeping of them. Mixed in with it and a part of it is a murder mystery that gets wild. I have read a couple other books by this author, and have enjoyed them all.
Interesting plot, good main characters, well written settings (though at times a bit more detailed than I personally have patience with).
Definitely above average for this genre. Warning the timeline jumps around quite a bit and there are a lot of characters. The reader doesn't know at first who is going to be important and who is just local color. The dates jump from 2009 to 777 to 1947...you get the idea. There are a couple of times when something is referenced by shorthand (e.g. an acronym) before it's explained. And at least one word is used anachronistically. Probably nobody cares but me.
I *strongly* recommend, if you like to keep track of times and places and people, that you note down as you read dates and names. There is nothing more frustrating than getting to page 100 or so and having a character reappear and you can't remember who he is or what he was about.
I'd really like the author to produce at the beginning a Dramatis Personae, grouped by date, of the major characters. It would have made the jerkey time switches a bit less frustrating.
Oh, yes, I recommend it for your reading pleasure.
Loved it. From the 8th. century to now is a long time. One thing that usually bothers me is the jumping back and forth, but this was smooth and filled in the gaps very nicely.
Life in a monastery is hard enough but for a savant who can't talk and won't listen it could be deadly. In the year 777 on the 7th day of the 7th month to a 7th son a 7th son was born. He was named Octavus.
Will Piper was a washed up FBI profiler. He was just biding his time to retirement. That all goes down the drain when a serial killer comes to New York. Will gets stuck with the case and a new partner. He didn't want either.
This book has great dialogue and suspense. It's hard to tell sometimes who is the good guy and who is the bad.
Not only is this a great police procedural but is shows how the dark side of law can work. It even tells you what is inside the famous "Area 51."
I already have the other 2 books of this trilogy.
