An excellent biographical novel of John and Abigail Adams, the story is presented mostly from the perspective of Abigail although John's is also clearly set forth. For anyone who has a decent knowledge of American history at the time of the War for Independence, it will be evident that the author took a great deal of time researching in order to present a fairly accurate portrait of the world of the Adams, the tremendous changes of those turbulent times, and their personal feelings and reactions to their altering circumstances. For any American, one can gain a greater appreciation for one of the lesser known of the Founding Fathers, the second President of the United States, and the woman who was his lifetime companion, supporter, and friend. All in all, the personal details gleaned from the personal letters of the Adams's plus the excitement of the setting at the founding of the nation make this book an absolutely irresistible read for anybody interested in history, love, or just a good story.Tags : Those Who Love: A Biographical Novel of Abigail and John Adams [Irving Stone] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I love this book
I first read this book years ago in paperback, but lost it while moving around the country. It remained one of my favorite books (love story) of all time. Recently, I found it in a nice, used, hardcover edition. It now sits proudly on the shelf with my classic literature. The author did a wonderful job at telling the story of John and Abigail Adams, their deep and enduring love for each other, and also their love for a new nation. You will NOT be disappointed in this book. 5+ stars!!!
I read this book in 1965, the year I married, and so it was a trip down memory lane in 2015. How writing about love has changed in 50 years. The precision of the vocabulary meant I reached for the dictionary a few times. The descriptive style brought me into a time where the difficulty of communication between two people who truly loved one another was more often the result of bad roads, slow mail delivery and the melding of strong personalities. I did enjoy the change of pace from modern reads and especially the skill of Irving Stone to finesse a great story.
I read this originally back in the 1970s and loved it. I was a little apprehensive about going back to it thinking I might destroy that wonderful memory. I should not have been worried. This is a wonderful, intimate story beautifully told. Irving Stone has this incredible knack to make you feel like you are there. John and Abigail are giants in early American history. John had a mastermind and she was his equal. They were the perfect balance for one another in this book brings it out. We are invited into the inner sanctum of their lives and we share their joys and feel their frustrations and sorrows. The story gently unfolds and you gain a depth of feeling for both. It is still a wonderful read.
When I first read this book many years ago, I fell in love with John Adams. Stone brought to life not only this most honorable of our founding fathers, and his beloved wife Abigail, but other "characters" of our nation's revolutionary history such as Samuel Adams, a rabble-rouser who was afraid to ride horses. So many intimate details of John and Abigails's life together were brought to this novel that you feel as though you know and love them both. You can't go wrong with this one.
Really put that time period into perspective. I had read John Adams before, but couldnl't get into it. After Those Who Love, I read it with a lot better understanding.
I had read this novel, which belonged to my mother, so many times that it was falling apart. This copy will fall apart soon, too, but it is still a great read and for a great price.
